My ‘Why’ for Shooting Boudoir

Why Boudoir Photography?

Sometimes I find it hard to put into words why I shoot boudoir photography. To me, it’s so much more than photos. It’s about self acceptance, body positivity and art. It’s about getting glammed up and laughing and having fun just being yourself. It’s about the transformation that takes place between the time you walk in the studio and walk back out the door. It’s about feeling beautiful, and that’s something I believe everyone deserves to feel and experience.

I started boudoir photography because I saw the beauty in everyone that came in the studio door. I believed that I could show anyone what I saw through my camera. Women tell me they feel they can’t look ‘that beautiful’ because of x, y, z. I love showing them the photos from their shoot and showing them that they CAN, in fact, feel beautiful. Seeing their reactions to the photos on the back of my screen changed me. From that moment on, I knew I found a new passion.

It was now my job to me a mirror for my clients. Not the mirror that the world shows you and shames you, but the one who sees past all of the lumps, bruises and imperfections. The one that shows you your true beauty and sparkle.

The Transformation

The transformation that takes place in the studio is the best part of the whole experience for me. When a women arrives in studio, most of the time she’s nervous, sometimes even visibly nervous. Shaky hands and voices, sweaty hands and faces are things I see all the time. Once they sit in the chair to get their hair and makeup done, the transformation begins. The client slowly starts to shed those signs and feelings or nervousness and anxiousness.

Then the shoot starts. The first series is to get you all warmed up. When I show the client the back of my camera after the first series, I usually hear “Oh my gosh, that’s me?! No way that’s me!” As we go into the next series and then the next, the laughter and smiles start to come out. Then she starts to feel sexy. Sexy eyes come out. And you can tell that it’s all starting to click with them.

By the time we finish the session and go into the reveal, we’re friends. We’ve just shared an experience that they will always remember. We’ve laughed and shared stories about our lives.

Once I show them their photos on the screen, their jaws drop. They see themselves like they never have before. This is one of the amazing things about boudoir photography. I get the chance to show them how I see them, how their spouse sees them and be their mirror. When they walk out the door, they’re smiling so big and they can’t wait to tell their friends about what they just did.

A little piece of my story…

After loosing myself and letting go of my health, diet and simply not caring like I used to, I had gained a lot of weight and lost a lot of self confidence. I hate to admit it but after being married for so many years, I began to get complacent. In everything. I knew I wanted to feel beautiful and re-gain that confidence I used to carry so well but didn’t want to do anything about it. I was telling stories through photos of other people and showing other women how beautiful they were but never felt it about myself. After finally pulling the trigger on scheduling my own boudoir session, I was ready to feel better, to feel like myself again. To see what my husband saw in me and just feel sexy. After having my session I actually felt brought back to life. I had these photos that I literally didn’t think looked like me, and it was then that I realized that boudoir meant so much more. After having experienced this first hand, I knew that boudoir photography was important work and I was just getting started helping women feel what I had felt that day. To feel like yourself again. To get that spark and that zest back. To feel sexy and confident and like I have it all together.

For me, boudoir is a celebration of your body and who you truly are. No matter the weight your self-conscious about or the stretch marks your body shows off proudly. i take pride in being able to show women how to celebrate their bodies and where they are at, their battles and their victories that they’ve been through. Their beauty. Let me help you remind you how to love and to be proud of yourself.
